OptiTrack: Optical Motion Capture Solutions

1. How does licensing work?

  1. The customer purchases a software product for which a license is required
  2. The customer will receive activation codes
  3. The customer will then activate the license using the provided codes and the serial number from one of their cameras or hardware keys
  4. The activation process will provide the customer with a license file that allows the software to be used as long as the matching camera or hardware key (serial number) is present
  5. The customer can download new versions of the software as long as their license is valid
  6. If the license is time limited, updates must be purchased to extend the period for which it is valid. The version of the software for which the customer's license was originally valid will continue to work even if the license expires.

2. Which products require licenses, updates and activation?

The following OptiTrack software products require activation:

  • Point Cloud toolkit
  • Rigid Body toolkit
  • Tracking Tools
  • ARENA Motion Capture software
  • ARENA Expression Face Motion Capture software

Note: The OptiTrack baseline SDK is available for use free of charge and does not require a license.

3. Which software can be used with the licenses?

See the following Software and License Compatibility Chart:

Point Cloud Rigid Body Tracking Tools ARENA
Point Cloud License Y
Rigid Body License Y Y Y
Tracking Tools License     Y
ARENA License       Y

4. What does a license allow me to do?

A software license performs two basic functions once activated:

  • It enables the use of a software product as long as the camera or hardware key for which it was activated is present.
  • During the time period for which the license is valid the customer will have access to download updated versions of the product which become available. The updated versions may include bug fixes and/or feature updates.

5. What is included in updated versions of licensed products?

Updated versions of a licensed product may include bug fixes and/or feature updates.

6. What types of licenses are there and how long do the licenses last?

There are two types of licenses:

  • Perpetual licenses do not expire and do not require updates.
  • Time limited licenses require the purchase of an initial license which is valid for a period of time. License updates must be purchased to extend the valid licensing period.

The following licenses apply to OptiTrack software products:

  • Point Cloud toolkit: perpetual license (no updates required)
  • Rigid Body toolkit: perpetual license (no updates required)
  • Tracking Tools: time limited, 1 year initial license, 1 additional year per update that is purchased
  • ARENA: time limited, 1 year initial license, 1 additional year per update that is purchased
  • ARENA Expression: time limited, 1 year initial license, 1 additional year per update that is purchased

7. What happens when a license expires and updates are not purchased?

  • The customer will no longer have access to updates or new releases of the software.
  • The version of the software for which the customer's license was originally valid will continue to work.

Note: Perpetual licenses do not expire.

8. What if I forget to buy updates for a license that expires?

License updates can be acquired at any time by purchasing extra years of "Maintenance." If a customer allows a license to lapse, they must purchase updates to cover the entire lapsed time period in order to bring their license into a current valid state again.

9. How far into the future can I subscribe for license updates?

Customers may extend their license valid time up to two years into the future.

10. What if the camera or hardware key that my license is locked to breaks?

The camera or hardware key should be returned for repair or replacement. Please see our Return Policy for information on obtaining RMA #. If the product cannot be repaired, NaturalPoint will transfer the license to a new camera or hardware key.

11. Is it possible to change the camera or hardware key serial number that a license is assigned to?

A license will remain locked to the camera or hardware key serial number it is originally activated for unless the product breaks and cannot be repaired.*

* If you locked your license to a camera before November 15, 2008 and would like to transfer it to a Hardware Key, you have until February 23, 2009 to contact our support team and request the transfer.

No license transfers from a camera to a Hardware Key will be performed after February 23, 2009.

12. Can the software and license be transferred to another computer?

Yes, the software can be moved as long as the camera or hardware key that is licensed is moved with it.

13. Can ARENA Expression and ARENA licenses both be installed on the same computer?

Yes, installing both licenses will allow full body mocap or face mocap to be captured using the same system.

Note: Because camera configurations ideal for full body mocap are usually not suitable for face mocap, capturing face and body motion at the same time is not currently supported.

14. Does an ARENA Expression license allow full body mocap to be performed?

ARENA Expression will be an alternate mode of ARENA versus standard full body mocap mode.

With an ARENA Expression license only facial mocap and rigid body tracking is possible. With an ARENA full body mocap license, only full body mocap and rigid body tracking is possible.

If only one mode has been purchased, it will work as a standalone product. If both licenses are present then either mode can be selected as needed.

15. How does the USB Hardware Key work?

Software licenses can be locked to a USB Hardware Key in place of a camera. Moving a Hardware Key to another computer also requires the user to copy the associated software license file. This allows software licenses to be moved between different locations more easily, without disturbing cameras in a calibrated setup.

Note: The USB Hardware Key does not contain a license itself. Software licenses must be purchased separately and locked to the Hardware Key. This results in downloadable license files which must be used along with the key.

16. Can a Rigid Body or Point Cloud license be used with the Tracking Tools 2.0 software?

Rigid Body toolkit licenses are compatible with the Tracking Tools 2.0 software.

Point Cloud toolkit licenses are not compatible with the Tracking Tools 2.0 software. If you have a Point Cloud license and would like to upgrade to the Tracking Tools 2.0, please contact our support team for details.

17. How can I check whether my software license has lapsed?

Use the Check License Status page to find out the date you activated the license and for how long it is currently valid.
